Fast

October 5–7

All of us are invited to join this 3-day fast

Purpose

Seek God more passionately for ourselves, our church, and our city.

What Is Fasting?

But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4

Definition: A Spiritual Practice

Intentionally give up something to make space and time to seek God

The Foundation: Acknowledging Our True Dependence

We live by God and His Word alone (Matthew 4:4) not by bread (material things).

What Fasting Reveals

When good things are denied, our hearts' true condition is revealed, freeing us from distractions and burdens so we experience freedom in Jesus.

More space and time allow deeper communion with God as the Holy Spirit meets our hearts and fills the empty places revealed through fasting.

What Fasting Is Not

Fasting does not earn God's salvation, favor, approval, or forgiveness. Jesus has already given us a perfect relationship with God.

Fasting is not a public display of spiritual maturity or piety.

Fasting is a spiritual practice affecting your spirit and the spiritual world, not just a weight-loss trend.

How Can I Fast?

Food Fasts (Most Common in Scripture)

Regular Fast: No food, only water

Liquid Fast: No solid foods, only light liquids (e.g., juices)

Daniel Fast: Abstain from tasty or certain foods (meats, sweets); eat only vegetables, bread

Benedict Fast: One meal per day

Media/Entertainment/Social Media Fast

Fast from media, entertainment, and social media except essential work needs

Be Intentional

Review your schedule and pray, asking God what can be cut for 3 days

As a part of our discussion today, we will take time to pray and ask God what to do for the fast.
